This past weekend u.net was invited to present Bigger Than Hip Hop at the Paci Paciana squatt in Bergamo where I had the chance to share the stage with Militant A and Pol G, rappers of the italian Hip Hop group Assalti Frontali. The event was organized by a group of young Freestylers, calling themselves BG'sTeam who took the stage, rippin it, after Assalti's acoustic set. Though i've been listening to Assalti Frontali for years this was my first introduction to Militant A who gave a plus connecting my words, my story with his own creating a great chemistry on stage and among the audience. We'll be repeating this formula in Rome on friday 23rd of February at ESC Atelier Occupato and probably - but i don't wanna tell y'all too much - at Strike with a Special Guest on thursday the 22nd of march.

u.net is teaming up with the NOMAMA Project for a series of lectures to the teens who are following their workshops on MCing. The idea is to have 4 sessions to be recorded in mp3 (once edited they'll be availble from hiphopreader.it and the website of the Global Project. From the late 60s to the early 80s to focus on the birth of Hip Hop culture. u.net will bring with him a number of guest, some true original pioneers from the Boogie Down Bronx!

A-Alikes:The A-Alikes are probably one of the most political and yet underated and overlooked groups in Hip Hop right now. This Brooklyn based duo consists of A-Black aka ‘K’ Karon and Ness aka P-Red who were originally from Tallahasse Florida where they came up with dead prez and the RBG family. I Eat, You Eat, the first their full-length album and speaks their mind and politics. At a time when the economy is sinking, the prison industrial complex is expanding and the music industry is shrinking into a handful of major corporations driven by sales alone, I Eat You Eat is a fearless offering, connected to the streets and concerned with the future of the community. Influenced by Kool G Rap, Nas and dead prez and inspired by Pac, K and Ness are truly students of the game. u.net met A-Alikes last september at the Merrit College in BK. Art as a Tool for Liberation: Continuing a long tradition of resistant and revolutionary art, concurrently practiced in conflicts all over the world, Douglas was the most prolific and persistent graphic agitator in the American Black Power movements. Douglas profoundly understood the power of images in communicating ideas. Conceptually, Douglas’s images served two purposes: first, illustrating conditions that made revolution seem necessary; and second, constructing a visual mythology of power for people who felt powerless and victimized. Emory’s drawings were a tool for liberation, visualizing violent confrontations with perceived oppressors. The drawings showed brutal realities of post-civil rights ghetto life for African Americans. Encouraging metaphoric or physical revolutionary action, Douglas’ harshest images simultaneously elicited revulsion at the graphic violence and attraction to the idea of effective self-defense. Il weekend scorso u.net ha presentato Bigger Than Hip Hop presso il Centro Sociale Paci Paciana di Bergamo dove ho avuto l'occasione di essere accompagnato nella chiaccherata con il pubblico da Militant A and Pol G - Assalti Frontali. La serata è stata organizzata da un gruppo di giovani freestyler, il BG'sTeam, esibitosi dopo il set acustico proposto dagli Assalti. Sebbene i testi di Militant A mi accompagnino da oltre 15 anni, questa è stata la prima occasione in cui ci siamo conosciuti e abbiamo provato a integrare le nostre esperienze e storie di vita cercando di comunicare con i presenti. L'effetto è stato molto interessante e , soprattutto, incoraggiante. Proveremo a ripetere questa formula - totalmente estemporanea - venerdì 23 febbraio a Roma presso l'ESC Atelier Occupato e con molto probabilità - non voglio dir troppo finchè non sarà tutto definito nei particolari - allo Strike ma questa volta con un ospite speciale- il tutto giovedì 22 marzo.

u.net sta lavorando anche con i ragazzi del NOMAMA Project progettando una serie di incontri durante i workshop sull MCing organizzati presso il centro sociale Cantriere di Milano. L'idea è di offrire la possibilità di comprendere le origini della cultura Hip Hop attraverso 4 incontri di approfondimento su quegli anni. Il tutto sarà registrato in mp3 e sarà disponibile su hiphopreader.it e su Global Project. Dagli anni Sessanta ai primi anni Ottanta per uscire dalla rappresentazione mediatica e comprendere le condizioni storico che portarono alla nascita dell'Hip Hop. u.net sarà accompagnato da diversi ospiti tra cui anche alcuni pionieri provenienti direttamente dal Boogie Down Bronx!

Segni e immagini di liberazione: Continuando nella lunga tradizione della produzione d'arte rivoluzionaria e di resistenza, praticata in tutte le comunità in lotta nel mondo, Emory Douglas è ricordato come uno dei più proficui e incendiari agitatori culturali dell'era del Black Power Movement. Douglas già all'epoca aveva compreso il profondo impatto dell'immaginario visuale nella comunicazione. L’arte di Emoury Douglas si sviluppò lungo due direttrici: da un lato, illustrare alla comunità le umilianti condizioni di vita dei neri in America incitandola alla lotta, dall’altro, costruire una sorta di mitologia delle azioni dei militanti. Le immagini di Douglas operarono come strumenti di liberazione esplicitando le atrocità e le condizioni di vita disumane del ghetto nero.
