BBoys and BGirls have in recent years, established themselves as a prominent force in contemporary culture and lifestyle. Arbiters of taste, superstars of the club scene and global icons for a generation of Hip Hop fans, their influence is huge.

In order to better understand this worlwide phenomenon u.net is really excited about his partecipation to the BBoys for Life Conference which will take place on the 23rd June 2007 at the The REP, Birmingham, sponsored by Punch in partnership with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and BBoy’s Attic. This conference truly is the first of it kind in the UK, bringing the audience the chance to reflect on the culture of BBoying and inspire a new generation of artists.

The event will investigate the history, lifestyle, culture and champions of the art form through a series of panel discussions, lectures, master classes and films. BBoys for Life aims to uplift and educate, as well as share the business and fun of the BBoy phenomenon. Artists taking part include Popmaster Fabel (USA), Honey Rockwell (USA), TEKNYC (USA), Trac 2 (USA), BGirl Aruna (The Netherlands), The Next One aka Mauritizo (Italy), Benji Reid (UK), Hanifa Queen (UK), Jonzi D (UK), Normski (UK) and many, many more!

u.net is working hard on his nu editorial project, RENEGADES OF FUNK, an homage to the 70s scene, a research trying to highlight the time before the old school had even a name. Here you got two extracts/snippets of two interviews included in rhe nu book: a conversation with the first Hip Hop Latino DJ, Disco Wiz, and a focus on the making of Wild Style with film director/photgrapher Charlie Ahearn.

DJ Disco Wiz: DJ Disco Wiz (real name Luis Cedeño) is a Latino DJ who was briefly known as DJ Louie Lou born in Bronx New York on August 11, 1961. Half Cuban half Puerto Rican he is credited as being the first Latino Hip-Hop DJ, His contributions have paved the way for Latin DJs everywhere to make their mark in the industry.

Back in the day, Dj Disco Wiz was known for his aggressive battle style of DJing, and together with his partner and childhood friend Grandmaster Caz, then known as DJ Casanova Fly (1975) of the Mighty Force Crew throughout the mid- to late-1970s. They are legendary for their DJ battles in the streets of the South Bronx.

DJ Disco Wiz is also credited for being the first DJ to make a "mixed plate" in 1977 along with Grandmaster Caz, when he combined sound bites, special effects and paused beats. This is Hip-Hop’s first mixed dub recording. In the years since, DJ Disco Wiz has openly contributed to the education and recognition of the early years of hip-hop. The Making of Wild Style: In the 70's Ahearn moved to New York and began making independent films. In 1979 Ahearn directed a super8mm kung fu feature movie, The Deadly Art of Survival in housing projects of the Lower East Side.

In the Summer of 1980 he began working with Fred Brathwaite and Lee Quinones on the hip hop classic Wild Style, which he wrote, directed and produced and which was first screened in 1982. After producing a number of videos on artists, Charlie Ahearn wrote and directed his next feature film Fear of Fiction in 1999.

Yes Yes Y´all, recently published by Da Capo Press and co authored by Charlie Ahearn and Jim Fricke is a oral history of the first decade of hip hop with over a 100 photos many of them by Ahearn. Check the interview with Filmmaker/Photographer Charlie Ahearn.

u.net si sta concentrando su un nuovo progetto editoriale intitolato RENEGADES OF FUNK, un omaggio alla scena musicale nera degli anni Settanta nel Bronx, una ricerca per riscoprire il periodo in cui la old school non aveva ancora un nome che la definisse. DJ Disco Wiz: DJ Disco Wiz, DJ di origine latina conosciuto inizalmente con il nome di DJ Louie Lou. Wiz ha iniziato ha suonato con Grandmaster caz, conosciuto all'epoca come DJ Casanova Fly della Mighty Force Crew, per buona parte degli anni Settanta.

Wiz (il vero nome è Luis Cedeno) è nato nel Bronx (New York) l'11 agosto 1961, da genitori cubanie portoricani. Wiz è conosciuto per essere stato il primo DJ Hip Hop latino e per il suo stile molto agguerrito durante le DJ battle che, dal 1975 in poi, affrontò su base quotidiana per le strade del Bronx con il partner Grandmaster Caz , prima che quest'ultimo si unisse ai Cold Crush Brothers.

Wiz è anche conosicuto per aver inventato il "mixed plate" nel 1977. Caz e Wiz mixarono suoni, effetti speciali e ritmi diversi creando la prima registrazione mixata nella storia dell'Hip Hop. Leggete l'intervista con DJ Disco Wiz.

Charlie Ahearn:
Attivo nella scena artistica underground newyorkese sin dalla metà degli anni Settanta, Charlie Ahearn ha iniziato la sua carriera di fotografo e regista nel collettivo artistico Co-Lab Collective impegnato nella creazione di Artivism, produzioni culturali funzionali allo sviluppo della creatività e delle forme espressive del gruppo e, soprattutto, alle esigenze delle comunità nella quale vivevano e operavano: il Bronx.

Nel 1980, durante una esposizione, divenuta storica, – tra i writer spiccavano i lavori di Jean Michelle Basquiat e Keith Haring – inun edificio abbandonato di Times Square, Charlie Ahearn conobbe Fab Five Freddy e Lee Quinones del collettivo di writer Fabolous 5. Quell’incontro porterà ad un sodalizio artistico e professionale che si concretizzerà nella realizzazione di Wild Style (1982), il primo film ad evidenziare le forme espressive conosciute come i quattro elementi – Mcing, DJing, B-boying e Writing – come parte del movimento culturale che da lì a poco avrebbe assunto il nome di Hip Hop in tutto il mondo.

Nel corso degli ultimi anni Charlie Ahearn ha continuato la sua attività di fotografo e regista (nel 2000 ha presentato il suo primo lungometraggio al Sundance film Festival) senza mai tralasciare la sua passione, la ricerca delle origini della cultura Hip Hop. Dopo anni immersione tra i racconti, ricordi e le memorie dei pionieri della scena Uptown, tra fotografie e flyer dai sapori decisamente old school, Ahearn ha pubblicato nel 2003 Yes Yes Y’All, una storia orale / fotografica sui primi dieci della cultura Hip Hop.
