While the primaries are in full swing in the US and the international audience is carefully monitoring the results in the different states, most people in and outside the country are totally unaware that on October 23rd 2007 the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act passed 404 to 6 in the House. This bill is proposing an expansion of Homeland Security with the objective of spying on citizens whose political or religious beliefs might lead them to commit violent acts. Of the notable votes, Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich did vote against the bill. This bill was hardly debated, it was passed almost unanimously. As underlined by activist from The national Hip Hop Political Convention, what is feared by the activist community is a general crack down on social justice activism and civil disobedience, or any dissent for that matter, because it now takes on a new and legal form. Being that it is so easy to point the finger, anybody willing to speak out will be in the scope of this proposed commission. Including many Hip Hop artists who have been the most critical of the government and its agencies.

I first read an essay by Yvonne Bynoe on urbanthinktank.org enjoying the analisys, then i heard her lectuirng in 2004 during the National Political Convention in Newark, NJ and is when i finally read Stand and deliver I understood she was someone i definitively wanted to connect and build. Bynoe's work focuses on Hip Hop, politics and women's empowerment. She is also the author of The Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip Hop Culture (Greenwood Press, 2005). Check the interview. (eng/ita)

In 2006, Touré published his third book, Never Drank the Kool-Aid, a collection of his writing from Rolling Stone, the New Yorker, the New York Times, the Village Voice, Playboy, and other magazines, published between 1994 and 2005. It's the cronicle of Tourè's journey through the fun house called American pop culture, its room filled with creative arrogant, sensitive and extraordinary people, most of whom happen to be famous. Mentre le primarie negli Stati Uniti richiamano l'attenzione dell'opinione pubblica internazionale sui futuri candidati alle presidenziali grazie all'ampia copertura mediatica, nelle settimane passate in pochi hanno sottolineato la gravità di una legge, il Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act, varata dal Congresso statunitense il 23 ottobre 2007. Il PETA propone di espandere gli scopi dell'Homeland Security Act, autorizzando il monitoraggio di qualsiasi cittadino il cui credo politico e religioso potrebbe indurlo a commettere atti violenti. Come è stato sottolineato dagli attivisti di The National Hip Hop Political Convention, la preoccupazione maggiore per la comunità di attivisti consiste nella possibilità di nuove campagne repressive contro le organizzazioni impegnate in lotte politiche e sociali, e comunque nei confronti di qualsiasi forma di dissenso nei confronti dell'establishment. E ora il tutto è legale! Non che in passato le agenzie addette alle repressione si fossero fatte scrupoli, vedi Cointelpro e Operazione Kaos. Grazie al PETA è altamente probabile che chiunque esprima posizioni scomode per l'establishment sarà oggetto di attenzioni molto particolari. Tutto ciò riguarda anche molti artisti Hip Hop, critici nei confronti del governo.

In questa edizione una interessante intervista su temi quali razza, classe e Hip Hop con l'autrice/attivista Yvonne Bynoe; una conversazione sulla carriera e esperienza di Tourè, giornalista/autore/presentatore; e un'articolo su Saafir, MC di Oakland, dal titolo Beautiful Insanity scritto da Yahsmin M. Ho letto per caso un articolo firmato da Yvonne Bynoe sul sito urbanthinktank.org incuriosito dalla brillante analisi, poi l'ho sentita durante una conferenza a Newark nel 2004 ma solo quando ho letto il suo libro Stand and Deliver ho deciso di mettermi in contatto con lei per progetti futuri. Il lavoro della Bynoe copre ambiti come l'Hip Hop, politica e i diritti delle donne. Questo è il risultato di una intervista via email durata qualche mese. Yvonne Bynoe ha pubblicato anche The Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip Hop Culture (Greenwood Press, 2005). E' stata definita una delle voci più importanti di questa generazione di afro americani. Dalla biografia di Saafir, Dall'aver vissuto con Tupac, all'esser sopravvissuto a un incidente aereo, fino a diventare un devoto del Sunni Muslim, Saafir ha vissuto una serie di esperienze che hanno trasformato profondamente la sua vita che ben pochi rapper possono dire d'ver passato. Leggendo Beautiful Insanity si può comprendere come il senso di difficoltà e il dolore delle esperienze vissute sia stato superato grazie a una continua evoluzione personale dell'uomo e dell'artista.
