Punch, in collaborazione con il Birmingham Repertory Theatre e BBoy’s Attic, presentano BBoys for Life!, un evento che celebra la cultura BBoy/BGirl.
Negli ultimi anni, BBoys & BGirls sono diventati una forza prominente nella società contemporanea, diventando arbitri del gusto e delle mode, star del dancefloor e icone globali per una generazione di fan della cultura Hip Hop.
Bboys for life è la prima conferenza sul tema in oggetto che avrà luogo in Gran Bretagna: si analizzerà la storia, lo stile di vita e l'arte del Bboying attraverso una serie di panel e dibattiti, interventi e Q&A, film e performance. BBoys for Life intende educare e divertire attraverso il fenomeno del BBoying.
I partecipanti all'evento includono i seguenti artisti: Popmaster Fabel (USA), Honey Rockwell (USA), TEKNYC (USA), Trac 2 (USA), BGirl Aruna (The Netherlands), The Next One aka Mauritizo (Italy), Benji Reid (UK), Hanifa Queen (UK), Jonzi D (UK), Normski (UK) e molti molti altri ancora...
Intervista a Punch (grazie a/thanks to Ammo Talwar e/and Chyntia):
1. Vorrei chiedervi di parlare delle attività di Punch al pubblico italiano...
Punch è un’esperienza indipendente musicale nata da un negozio di musica di stanza a Perry Barr, Birmingham (uk). L’idea di creare una società è nata quando i DJ che lavoravano nel negozio hanno iniziato a dare lezioni e dimostrazioni improvvisate ai ragazzi che, bigiando la scuola, venivano a guardarli ed imparare da loro. L’allora proprietario del negozio ed ora direttore di Punch, Ammo Talwar, iniziò a comprendere quali fossero le mancanze di un sistema che non era del tutto in grado di trasmettere e veicolare l’arte ai giovani. Se i giovani saltavano la scuola per venire al negozio, forse si sarebbe potuti intervenire con esperti in campo musicale direttamente nelle scuole. Così Ammo iniziò ad organizzare workshop per DJ e MC in diverse scuole dell’area. Questa strategia si dimostrò vincente e Punch ha potuto allargare le proprie attività a livello nazionale offrendo workshop di “arte urbana” - inclusi breakdance, graffiti, BMX, skateboard e molto altro ancora. Oggi Punch è un’organizzazione per lo più composta da artisti, conosciuta e rispettata in tutta la Gran Bretagna come negozio e un’agenzia di promozione e marketing musicale, molto apprezzata per il focus sulle attività formative e per progetti riguardanti i giovani. Oltre a ciò, Punch commissiona e produce diverse produzioni culturali quali esperienze di teatro, danza, arti visive e film. Punch promuove il BASS Festival (un festival di un mese che celebra le diverse forme d’arte di strada e DJs e B-boys for Life, conferenze internazionali atte a celebrare l’arte del DJing e del B-Boying.
2 B-boys for Life sembra rappresentare il secondo evento teso a celebrare gli Elementi della cultura Hip Hop, dobbiamo apettarci che il discorso continui...
In tutte le attività intraprese l’obiettivo di Punch è sempre stato duplice: formazione e divertimento. Con eventi come DJs e B-Boys for Life, Punch intende offrire al proprio pubblico momenti d’incontro durante i quali approfondire la storia, la cultura e il futuro della scena attraverso l’intervento dei protagonisti, esperti, eroi sconosciuti e icone. Grazie a queste attività intendiamo educare e, soprattutto, abbattere le barriere sociali che esistono nella veicolazione delle diverse forme artistiche e di creare una piattaforma per dare luce a nuovi artisti.
Stiamo creando le basi per una conferenza simile dedicate all’arte dell MCing e speriamo di standardizzare il format e di poter fare un tour nazionale.
3 Perchè Punch ha deciso di creare un evento che celebri la cultura bboy? Che tipo di influenza questa cultura esercita sulla gioventù inglese?
Un'influenza massiccia! Possiamo dire che rappresenti un fenomeno di portata mondiale; purtroppo non ci sono molte organizzazioni come Punch dedite a diffondere la conoscenza in capo musicale. Molti eventi connessi alla cultura B-boy sono troppo commerciali e troppo focalizzati sul denaro piuttosto che sulla diffusione internazionale di questa cultura. Punch crede che il B-boying sia un fenomeno culturale di portata enorme che ha arricchito la musica, la danza, la moda e la politica del movimento contemporaneo negli ultimi 20/30anni. Crediamo che il pubblico debba essere informato e formato gratuitamente riguardo queste nuove esperienze.
4 E' interessante l'idea di presentare pionieri della vecchia scuola e artisti contemporanei, Bboys statunitensi e europei, che tipo di dibattiti vi aspettate da questo mix eclettico?
Dei confronti molto vivaci! L’anno scorso durante i dibattiti e i panel per DJs for Life, gli artisti si sono confrontati in maniera vivace tra loro e con in pubblico. Ci aspettiamo qualcosa di simile per l’incontro sulla B-boy culture. Credo che il pubblico sarà entusiasta di potersi confrontare e conoscere con diversi artisti e, magari, con il proprio idolo.
5 Parlando di ospiti, ci vuoi parlare un poco della line-up? Ho saputo che avete appena ricevuto la conferma di partecipazione di una leggenda del B-boying mondiale come TRAC2.
Si, siamo molto orgogliosi di avere una leggenda come TRAC2 per il nostro evento. E’ la prima volta che partecipa ad un incontro al di fuori degli US. Per coloro che non lo conoscono, TRAC2 è nato e cresciuto nel Bronx. Influenzato dalla Sal Soul Crew, TRAC2 ha iniziato a praticare il b-boying nel 1975 diventando membro della Sal Soul crew w di un’altra crew molto popolare all’epoca: The Bronx Boys. E’ stato tra i fondatori della StarChild LaRock Crew. Nel 1978 ha partecipato alla prima battle tra B-boy. TRAC2 è stato tra i primi ad introdurre elementi di ginnastica nel suo repertorio. Vincitore del primo contest tra B-boy, è l’inventore di una delle mosse fondamentali del B-Boying, un passo chiamato “track”. Ha creato anche il “1990”, altro passo molto popolare. E’ uno dei massimi esperti sulla storia del B-boying ed è incluso nei video-documentari “DMC B-Boy Foundations”, “Freshest Kids”, “From Mambo to Hip Hop” e “Planet B-boy”.
Altri partecipanti all’evento sono Bubble aka Hanifa Queen, la prima B-girl inglese, nata a sole dieci miglia da dove si terrà l’evento. Pop Master Fabel dei Rock Steady Crew e Maurizio aka Tha Next one e molti altri ancora. Ci saranno oltre 30 ospiti internazionali.
6 Ci sarà un panel sulla possibilità di intraprendere la carriera artistica come professione... Qual'è la vostra idea a riguardo?
E’ una domanda interessante. Credo che il b-boying solo di recente abbia raggiunto lo status di forma artistica ufficiale. Il b-boying sta passando dalle strade alle scuole di danza ed in questo senso si stanno aprendo carriere e possibilità di guadagno, inesistenti in precedenza. Oltre a ciò, la recente evoluzione internazionale del teatro Hip Hop sta creando opportunità per collaborazioni ed evoluzioni del b-boying. Sta diventando una delle forme artistiche più innovative e d’avanguardia. Tutto ciò porta con sé fondi e riconoscimento economico.
7 Qualche commento finale?
Siamo felici e orgogliosi di poter fare questo tipo di attività. Il talento dei giovani deve essere sostenuto, promosso e sviluppato. Speriamo che organizzazioni quali Punch nascano in tutto il mondo e possano collaborare e creare link con altre organizzazioni che operino con i medesimi obiettivi.

BBoys and BGirls have in recent years, established themselves as a prominent force in contemporary culture and lifestyle. Arbiters of taste, superstars of the club scene and global icons for a generation of Hip Hop fans, their influence is huge.
So we’re really excited about our upcoming BBoys for Life Conference on the 23rd June 2007 at the The REP, Birmingham partnership with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and BBoy’s Attic. This conference truly is the first of it kind in the UK as we bring you the chance to reflect on the culture of BBoying and inspire a new generation of artists.
We will investigate the history, lifestyle, culture and champions of the art form through a series of panel discussions, lectures, master classes and films. BBoys for Life aims to uplift and educate, as well as share the business and fun of the BBoy phenomenon. Artists taking part include Popmaster Fabel (USA), Honey Rockwell (USA), TEKNYC (USA), Trac 2 (USA), BGirl Aruna (The Netherlands), The Next One aka Mauritizo (Italy), Benji Reid (UK), Hanifa Queen (UK), Jonzi D (UK), Normski (UK) and many, many more!
1.Can you briefly introduce Punch Records to the Italian audience and let them know where you from and where you at?
Punch are a grass roots music organization, born out of a urban music record shop based in the inner city area of Perry Barr, Birmingham UK.
The idea for the business began when the djs who worked in the shop used to give impromptu lessons and demonstrations to the local kids who would bunk off school to come and watch and learn from them. Punch’s now director, and then shop owner Ammo Talwar, saw that there was a gap in the arts provisions being made for kids at that time. If they were bunking school to come and learn music from record shop experts – surely it would be better if the records experts went to the schools? And so Ammo started making small partnerships in local schools, delivering djing and mcing workshops in lesson time. This incentive grew over the years to see Punch delivering strategically on a national scale and offering workshops in all of the urban arts including breaking dancing, parkour, graffiti, bmxing, skateboarding and more.
Punch today is a dynamic artist led organization, known throughout the UK as a retail store, promoter, producer, marketing agency and highly acclaimed education organisation. As well as a range of projects targeted at young people, Punch also commissions and produces work in a range of art forms including theatre, dance, music, visual arts and film. In addition to this we deliver a variety of marketing services and organise bespoke events and seminars such as the BASS Festival (a month-long festival celebrating the best of the streets, featuring workshops, master classes, artist lounges and film screenings) and DJs for Life an international DJ conference celebrating the art of turntablism.
2 B-boys for life seems the second (DJs for Life) of a series of events celebrating the elements of Hip Hop, will this evolve in a series of event/long term plan? What's the idea behind it?
In all it’s work punch has an ethos of both education and celebration. With conferences like BBOYs and DJS 4 Life it’s about creating an event where a non elitist diverse and open audience can come and learn the history, culture and future of the scene from its protagonists, experts, unsung heroes and contemporary leaders. By doing that we aim to educate and breakdown the social barriers that often exists around these type of art form, as well as creating a platform to highlight the true geniuses and artists that exist among them.
A third conference is in the pipeline for next year, this time it’s MCs for life and we’re hoping to standardize the format and tour it nationally so that it doesn’t just happen in one part of the country.
3 Why punch decided to create this event to celebrate worldwide BBoy and BGirl culture?What's your perspective on the influence on B-boying on today's clutre and society in England and eventually worldwide?
It’s massive and I would suggest already world wide phenomena, but there aren’t many organisations like Punch, who exist within the subsidized sector. Many of the events that go on for BBOY culture are commercially focused and are more about making money rather than bringing the culture to as wide an audience as possible. Punch believes BBOY culture is a hugely influential and important contemporary social movement which has enriched the music, dance, fashion and politics of the last 20 to 30 yrs and new audiences should have the opportunity to hear about that in a free, unbiased environment.
4 Is it interesting how you chose to mix old school b-boys legends and artists from different generation, to mix artists from the US and from Europe, what did you expect this event will provide to the audience comin to attend?
Some lively debates! At djs for life the artists really fed off each other and actively came to participate as audience members in their peers panels discussions and debates. We expect a similar thing to happen with BBOYS, I think any audience member could very easily expect to find themselves sitting next to their hero!
5 Talking about the guest, do you wanna highlight who are some of the confirmed artists? I know that very recently a legend like TRAC2 will be participating to the event?
Yes, We’re really pleased and proud to have TRAC2 coming over for his first ever appearance outside of the States.
For those who don’t know him Trac 2, was born and raised in the Bronx. Inspired in 1975 by the legendary Sal Soul Crew, he began B-boying the following year. Trac 2 eventually became a member of Sal Soul and another renowned crew: The Bronx Boys. He was a founding father of StarChild LaRock. In 1978, they participated in the first B-boy crew battle. Trac 2 was among the first to incorporate gymnastics in his repertoire. Winner of the first B-boy contest ever held, he originated a foundational B-boy move called "tracks". He also created a popular move called the "1990". He was featured in Rap Pages' historical issue on Hip Hop dance forms. Trac has served as a panelist and judge for events such as: The Rock Steady Anniversary, B-Boy Pro Am, The Rock & Rolll Hall of Fame and Museum's "Rhyme, Roots and Rage" and Blaze magazine's B-boy Battle. He is the lead historian and authority on the art of B-boying in the first official instructional video titled "DMC B-boy Foundations". More recently he was featured in several top documentaries including "The Freshest Kids", "From Mambo to Hip-Hop" and "Planet B-Boy".
Other guests include the UKS first ever B-girl ‘ Bubble’ aka Hanifa,who was suprising born and raised only 10miles away from where the conference will be held. The legendary Popmasterfabel from the original Rock Steady Crew– who will being sharing his skills in a one off popping masterclass, European supa star Mauritizio as well as many many more –there’s over 30 artists!
6 Reading the titles of the panels i see different important issues which will be dealt and in part. There will be lectures and Q&A on B-boying as business or hobby. Relevant questions will be dealt... How this panel came about? what's your perspective on this, talking about the the uK?
It’s an interesting one as I think bboying has only recently become to be seen as a legitimate form of dance. It has moved from the streets into the dance schools and with that move brings money and a career path that just didn’t exists before. Additionally with the strong evolution of hip hop theatre internationally opportunities to create work based around bboy practice are growing. It is now seen as quite ‘cutting edge ‘and with that recognition come an insurgence of funding streams and financial recognition.
7 Would you like to add any closing words?
We are pleased and proud to be able to be doing the work we do. The talent out there is rich and plentiful and should be supported, promoted and developed. We hope in time organisations like punch will start popping up all over the world and we can get an internationally based linked networks of development and support agencies working in tandem for the same goals.
