Few albums have left such an indelible mark on any genre as Illmatic, which is why, 20 years later, it’s still held up as the high watermark for pure rap album expression. To commemorate the album’s 20th anniversary (April 19, officially), Nas has already performed the album in its entirety backed by the National Symphony Orchestra, and on Wednesday, April 16, the Tribeca Film Festival will open with the premiere of the feature-length documentary Time is Illmatic.
